The work is checkout cleans on rented homes, and the list is the same on every one of them. Most jobs run three to eight hours depending on the size of the property. You work in empty properties, alone or paired with one other cleaner, weekdays between 9am and 5pm. The address, the size, the time and the access details come to you in advance, and the customer side is ours to handle.

Hard water is part of the job here. Thames Water classes the whole of its region as hard, so bathrooms and kettles take descaling on almost every property. If that is new to you, say so and we will talk it through rather than assume.

Two years of UK cleaning experience, minimum. Domestic, commercial or end of tenancy, it does not matter which, as long as you have been at it long enough to work quickly and still miss nothing. Come back to us once the hours are behind you, not before.

Two UK references. People who have paid you to clean and would pay you again. We ring them before your first job, every time, without exception. No references, no work.

Enhanced DBS check. You would be working alone inside somebody's empty property. Tenants, landlords and agents are entitled to know that everybody we send has been checked properly.

£1m public liability insurance. Cover for the rare day something gets knocked or marked. It is standard for any professional cleaner in the UK.

Right to work in the UK. We need to see the documents before your first job. There is no version of this we skip.

Own car. Work is spread across 10 Reading areas. Nothing is far, but you will often do one or two properties in a day on opposite sides of the town.

Own professional kit. Vacuum, mop, cloths, proper products, including something that shifts hard water scale. We do not supply equipment.

Nobody booking a clean ever reads this list, but everybody feels it. Every job goes to somebody with two years of UK experience behind them, references we have actually rung, an enhanced DBS check and £1m public liability cover. That is why the inventory clerk signs it off and the deposit comes back.

It is also why we turn people down. We would rather grow slowly than fill a diary with cleaners we cannot vouch for.
